About Me
ほなみ (Honami) 先生 — Your Teacher
I'm a native Japanese teacher with over 7 years of experience teaching students from all walks of life — private and group lessons, online and in-person. Some of my students are preparing to travel and want to build confident basic conversation. Others live in Japan and want to sharpen their fluency and deepen their understanding of Japanese culture and social customs. Others are simply learning for the love of it.
I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every student learns differently, so I adjust how I teach and what we focus on to fit you — your goals, your pace, and what actually keeps you motivated.
Most Japanese teachers will adapt what they teach you — travel phrases, business Japanese, JLPT preparation. I do that too, but the part I pay most attention to is how the teaching reaches you.
People take in new information differently. Some need a grammar point laid out step by step, logically, before it will hold. Others might need a metaphor, or something to picture. Some want more Japanese in the room from the first lesson; others need more English for longer. None of this is about ability. It's about which way in works for you.
So from the beginning I'm watching how you learn, not only what you know. Where you keep tripping on the same thing. Which explanations land and which slide straight off. What we happened to be doing on the day something suddenly clicked. The lessons change shape around what I find.
It's also why I care whether we get on. Learning a language means being confused out loud in front of another person, every week, for a long time. So I believe trust and connection are a big part of it too. Do I need any prior Japanese knowledge to start?
No — complete beginners are very welcome. Lessons are tailored to your level from day one.
What's your cancellation/rescheduling policy?
Free cancellation or rescheduling up to 24 hours before your lesson.
What lesson formats do you offer?
Private 1-on-1 lessons, small group lessons, and intensive/exam-prep courses — available online or in-person, in 60 or 90-minute sessions.
